Feb 23: Italian Labels 101

To the untrained eye, an Italian wine label can be tricky to decipher. And not just because of the language barrier.

Like much of Europe, wine in Italy is the result of generations of tradition, rooted in geography. You’re more likely to find a place name on the label than the name of a grape.

If you’re still stumped by Italian labels, this intro-level class is definitely for you. Dante Sommelier Brad Marr will guide you through some common terms and famous places you’ll find printed on Italian labels. With a little help and careful reading, you can gather a wealth of information about the wine before you even pop the cork.

Feb 24: Dive into Friuli

Bordering Austria and Slovenia, Italy’s northeastern region, Friuli Venezia-Giulia, is most famous for its white wines: delicate friulano and pinot grigio are produced widely. But there is plenty of red to be found as well, including native grapes like the peppery schioppetino and juicy refosco. Numerous French and German varietals of both colors also abound.

In this advanced edition of Wine School, Sommelier Brad Marr will walk you through the principal growing regions of Friuli. And, of course, there will be plenty to taste.
